Thread veins commonly affect the legs, but can appear anywhere on the body. They are small, thin blood vessels that sit just beneath the surface of the skin, and are most noticeable due to their reddish-purple colouring. This can make them rather unsightly and unattractive, made even worse by their spindly, branch-like appearance, which has led to them often being referred to as “spider veins.”
They tend to appear as we age, when the tiny vessels become damaged or unreliable. The valves within smaller blood vessels like this can often malfunction and prevent the sufficient flow of blood, causing swelling due to a back up of blood. This usually presents no immediate problems for the sufferer, aside from occasional aches and pains after long periods of sitting or standing. Even so, unsightly thread veins can leave you feeling self-conscious and embarrassed, which is why a lot of patients seek permanent laser treatment.
